The branch of our Federal
Government which most
benefited from the injection of
German brainpower was the Intelligence Community.
Developments
made possible in part by German scientists included the formulation of lysergic
acid diethylamide, or LSD, or
'acid', a synthetic hallucinogenic drug which was designed to
'discredit' a person among the general public due to its ability to
produce what appeared to be a psychotic breakdown.
It was first tested in by the CIA during the mid - 1950s in the MIddle
East. It was hoped that administering it to an anti - American
politician, for example, would help to prevent a given country's
populous for electing the person in question.
While there is no evidence that it was ever used in any operation
intended to impact a foreign election, some individuals have theorized
that LSD may have played a role in long - term 'brainwashing' of Sirhan
Sirhan, a Palestinian man who shot Senator Robert Kennedy on June 5th,
1968.
Formulas for producing LSD progressed from Federal laboratories into
the capable hands of black - market chemists
whom succeeded at producing LSD. From the underground
laboratories
the drug flowed into the stockpiles of West Coast drug dealers.
Perhaps unfortunately, America was far more involved in Vietnam than it
was in monitoring the changes that had been occurring in the drug
culture.
